River

River is the youngest and newest member of the Alexander menagerie. He’s a curly coated retriever who was born June 25, 2010, and he’s named after the title character in my novel Doubting River. (Jay says he’s not sure who that’s setting up to fail — me or River!)¬†When he first came to live with us, he had a short, straight puppy coat. Although now he has lovely curls (and looks more like Pax every day), I don’t have any pictures of anything but his straight puppy coat.

River is the first dog I’ve diligently trained in many years — not since Pax, actually. He and I are having a blast! He’s smart as a whip, funny, and charming. We won’t take any classes over the winter, both because I can’t guarantee the weather will make it possible for me to attend and because he’s an intact male about to enter adolescence, but come spring we may seriously pursue a CD.
